Educator and author Michael Linsin says, “Instilling a love for school affects and changes students like nothing else can or ever will, improving the effectiveness of virtually everything [a teacher does].”
At Aurum Preparatory Academy (Aurum Prep), our tuition-free public college preparatory middle school in East Oakland, there are at least six reasons our students love school:
Reason #1: College is the Goal
“Research, and the practical experience of many educators, suggest that encouraging
students to set their own goals can assist academic achievement and student
engagement.”
- EdWeek
At Aurum Prep we are preparing every student to attend college. Our rigorous academics challenge our middle schoolers to think in innovative ways and to develop a more sophisticated understanding of important ideas. We visit college campuses like UC Berkeley to inspire a vision for the future.
Reason #2: Our Teachers Care
Our teachers understand our students. They act as mentors and champions, developing close, trusting relationships in the classroom, during after school tutorials, and in twice daily advisory. Faculty members keep an eye on grades and behavior and help students develop strategies and set goals for maximum achievement.
Reason #3: We’re Preparing Future Leaders
We emphasize positive character education, vital to preparing our students to become the next generation of leaders. Our student-centered model empowers engagement, participation, and speaking up. Our students' voices are heard and matter.
Reason #4: Learning Happens Outside the Classroom
During Week without Walls we put design thinking into practice. Students take charge of projects from planning to execution and apply what they’ve learned in the classroom.
Our academic program is enhanced through the field trips we offer throughout the year. We visit places like Tesla, the African American Museum and Library, and other educational institutions.
Reason #5: Our After School Programs are Engaging
At Aurum Prep we don’t close the doors at the end of the academic day. Students can participate in free after-school clubs that include options like personal finance, art, gaming, and cooking. Or they may join one of our competitive sports teams and play basketball or soccer.
Aurum Prep partners with Envisioneers, a free enrichment program that meets on our campus Monday through Friday afternoons and helps students consider future possibilities.
Reason #6: Home-to-School Partnerships Keep Us Connected
“Home-school collaboration leads to improved student achievement, better
behavior, better attendance, higher self-concept and more positive attitudes
towards school and learning.”
One of the most important decisions a family makes for their children is where to send them to school. Aurum Prep Executive Director, Dr. Emmanuel T. Vincent says, “Together we will inspire our students to push their boundaries, embrace challenges, and achieve their full potential.”
We stay connected with families through ParentSquare, giving parents and guardians insight into their child’s progress here.
It is not too late to enroll for the 2023-24 school year. A limited number of spots are still available. Contact us today for more information. We’d love to meet you.
