IStudents and teachers love field trips. Field trips give us the opportunity to experience the world with all of our senses: new sights, smells, and sounds expand our world and inspire us to think and act creatively. At our tuition-free middle school, we intentionally incorporate field trips into the school year that not only extend the learning we gain in the classroom, but that are also fun!

College Campus Visits

Seeing a college with our own eyes can dramatically impact our dreams for the future. It becomes so much more real when we walk the campus and see the buildings, open spaces, diverse student life and activities first-hand. For Aurum Preparatory Academy (Aurum Prep) students, sometimes walking on the campus is the first opportunity to fully believe that a college education is attainable–and they belong!

Recently, Aurum Prep took our 6th, 7th and 8th grade students to the University of California Berkeley to see, walk and experience the campus, as well as to engage with current students. We empower our middle schoolers to make informed choices and set goals for their education early. This is just one component of our commitment to preparing students for a college degree and closing the opportunity gap.

Tesla and More

We teach all students to think about how to make things better. Design thinking is about taking apart ideas, looking at all angles and creating something new. What better way to see design thinking in action than a personal tour of a Tesla Factory?

Aurum Prep middle schoolers were thrilled to spend the day on the grounds of the Tesla facility to see how problem solving, creative thinking and innovation can impact our world. Learning about the systems in place to run a worldwide business and observing how a car goes from raw parts to a fully assembled automobile was eye-opening. And what middle school student doesn’t love picturing themselves in the seat of such pioneering technology?

Joy in learning is a big part of our philosophy at Aurum Preparatory Academy. As opportunities arise, we take advantage of all that our Bay Area has to offer. In preparation for our Week Without Walls, we took students to the African American Museum and Library at Oakland to conduct research for a project. We also love to reward our students for their hard work: each trimester our Advisory classes compete against each other in the areas of effort and consistency for a chance to go bowling.
